On September 17, 2007, Annalise Mannix, Deputy Assistant City Manager and Head Engineer of the City Sewer Department, brought the winning class for the 2007 Sewer Logo Contest over to label the city sewers. The class was Kim Weidner’s Fifth Grade Class at Poinciana Elementary School. The class won a $100 check sponsored by Historic Tours of America®. Mayor Morgan McPherson was in attendance to congratulate the class and tell them how important their individual efforts are to keeping Key West clean and green. Also on hand was Chris Belland, Co-Chairman of the Love Your Island program of the Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Belland congratulated the class and told them, “Your generation is the one that will reap the benefits or suffer the consequences for environmental practices of today.”
Several volunteers were on hand to help the kids do the stenciling. Many of them were parents of the kids, others just showed up to help out. The volunteers were Tommy Haskins (Victoria), Sam Trophia (Key West Butterfly & Nature Convervatory), Ann Marie Perez (Marina), Jan Blackman (Citizen) and Theresa Maguire (Melanie).
Ms. Mannix gave a demonstration on how to apply the stencils which required sweeping the sidewalk clean, laying the stencil down and then spraying the paint over the stencil. The logos say:
• “Only rain down the drain,”
• “Fish will die if you let your trash go by”
• “One man’s trash is not a fish’s treasure”
• “Dolphins may die if you let trash go by.”
“Hopefully, when citizens and visitors alike see the logos next to the storm drains they will be reminded that it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the trash out of the storm drains by disposing of it properly,” said Ms. Mannix. “People don’t realize that the things that wash off the sidwalks and streets, such as oil, cigarette butts and trash, go directly into the nearshore waters. Whether it’s pet litter, chemicals or manmade trash, it all affects the nearshore water quality, the fish and all of us who enjoy the beauty of Key West waters.” |
