THE CITY OF KEY WEST AND THE KEY WEST
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOLD CITYWIDE CLEANUP
|
Over 100 people turned up to help clean up the island.
On Saturday October 6, 2007, threatening rain could not did not deter over 100 citizens to come out on Saturday to participate in the Key West Chamber of Commerce and city of Key West Citywide Cleanup. Spearheaded by Chris Belland of Love Your Island (www.loveyourisland.com) and Assistant Deputy City Manager Annalise Mannix, civic groups, the military, city officials and concerned citizens, rolled up their sleeves and cleaned medians, mangroves, beaches and parks to show they love their island and to keep Key West clean and green. Over 2500 pounds of trash was collected!!!! Joining Mannix and Belland on the bandstand were Virginia Panico of the Key West Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce President and General Manager of Waste Management, Greg Sullivan, Key West Mayor Morgan McPherson, and newly elected city commissioner, Teri Johnston. |

After everyone enjoyed coffee and donuts, Chris Belland handed out heart pins and administered the Clean and Green pledge, “I promise to love my island and encourage others to do the same.” The hearts are to show that you love your island and will help spread the word. Groups then dispersed to their areas to begin the task at hand.
The First State Bank, Monroe County School Board, Sunrise Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, FKAA, Key West High School, Boys and Girls Club, Key West Parrotheads, Trophia Butterfly Foundation, Coldwell Banker, KFNMS, MCSD, Sunset Rotary, FKOC, Barefoot Appraisals, The Craig Company, AIDS Help, Key West Federal Credit Union, Anchor Lodge, Key West Shrine Club and the Key West Board of Realtors were both represented with large contingents, along with students from HOB.
Lake Andrews, the event’s original organizer, Christina Lindley and Jody Smith Williams from GLEE were on hand as well as Cindy DeRocher from the Gardens Hotel which recently received its Florida Green Lodging certification. Candidates Jimmy Weekly, Richard Klitnick and Ty Symorowski also rolled up their sleeves in the cleanup. Nancy Muñoz, a long time composter, decided to celebrate her birthday at the cleanup along with her daughter Leslie Holmes. A new twist to this cleanup was the collection of recyclables, which Waste Management collected along with the trash.
